Many portable electric space heaters use around 1500 watts on the high setting. A 1500-watt heater equals 1.5 kW, which means it uses 1.5 kWh of electricity for every hour it runs continuously.

The default electricity rate is set to $0.17 per kWh as a general U.S. residential estimate. You can change this value based on your actual electricity rate for a more personalized estimate.

How Heater Electricity Cost Is Calculated

Heater electricity cost is calculated using the heater wattage, usage time, and electricity rate.

Power in kW = heater watts ÷ 1000

Cost per hour = power in kW × electricity rate

Daily cost = cost per hour × hours used per day

Monthly cost = daily cost × days used per month

For example, a 1500-watt electric heater uses 1.5 kWh per hour. At $0.17 per kWh, it costs about $0.26 per hour. If used for 6 hours per day for 30 days, the estimated monthly cost would be about $45.90.

How to Reduce Electric Heater Cost

You can reduce electric heater costs by using the heater only in occupied rooms, reducing daily usage hours, sealing drafts, closing doors and windows, and improving insulation. Using a thermostat or timer can also help prevent unnecessary operation.

Electric heaters are often useful for small spaces, but using them as the main heat source for long hours can increase electricity costs. If heating costs are high, improving insulation or using a more efficient heating system may help reduce long-term energy use.
