Use this free LED Savings Tool to estimate how much money you can save by replacing old light bulbs with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Lighting may seem like a small part of your electricity bill, but if you have many bulbs running for several hours per day, switching to LEDs can reduce energy use and lower monthly costs.

To use the tool, enter the number of bulbs, the wattage of your old bulbs, the wattage of the new LED bulbs, hours used per day, days used per month, and your electricity rate. The calculator will estimate old bulb energy use, LED bulb energy use, monthly energy saved, monthly savings, and yearly savings.

LED bulbs usually use much less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs while producing similar brightness. For example, a 60-watt incandescent bulb may often be replaced by a 9-watt or 10-watt LED bulb, depending on brightness and product specifications.

The default electricity rate is set to $0.17 per kWh as a general U.S. residential estimate. You can change the rate based on your actual utility bill for a more personalized estimate.

How LED Savings Are Calculated

LED savings are calculated by comparing the electricity use of old bulbs with the electricity use of LED bulbs.

Old bulb energy use = number of bulbs × old bulb watts × hours used ÷ 1000

LED energy use = number of bulbs × LED watts × hours used ÷ 1000

Monthly savings = old bulb monthly cost - LED bulb monthly cost

Yearly savings = monthly savings × 12

For example, if you replace 10 old 60-watt bulbs with 9-watt LED bulbs and use them for 5 hours per day, the old bulbs use 3 kWh per day, while the LED bulbs use only 0.45 kWh per day. At $0.17 per kWh, the monthly savings can add up over time.

Why LED Bulbs Can Save Money

LED bulbs are more energy-efficient because they use less electricity to produce the same amount of light. They also usually last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs, which may reduce replacement costs over time.

Savings depend on how many bulbs you replace, how many hours they are used, the difference in wattage, and your electricity rate. Homes, offices, shops, garages, and outdoor lighting areas with long daily usage can benefit more from switching to LEDs.
